Noisy Garbage Collection Vehicles Nuuanu and School Streets

Comment:
I’m writing in regards to noisy commercial garbage collectors. I live at the corner of Nuuanu and School St and about 6 days a week I get woken up between 4:00 and 5:00 AM by Honolulu Disposal Service collecting the commercial garbage from Walgreens and several restaurants across the street. I’ve tried contacting the company directly and begging that they change their schedule but to no avail. Reading reviews on google indicates that this is a fairly common problem that they don’t seem particularly interested in fixing. The noise ordinance manual doesn’t seem to cover this situation and calling the police feels excessive so I was wondering if you had any suggestions or know of anything that may have worked in the past in regards to commercial garbage collectors.

Quieter O'ahu Response:
Aloha,
We hear all too often about commercial garbage collection vehicles.  And from personal experience I know there's no sleeping with the back-up alarms and clanging that these trucks make.

Under the newest version of the O'ahu Noise Reference manual (see below) you can find a complaint number for 1) vehicles picking up trash from schools, and 2) city and county collection vehicles.  Suggest contacting the city and county Refuse Division at 808-768-3601.  Even if it is not a city and county vehicle perhaps they can provide information of how best to report commercial vehicles.

Too, the Department of Health Noise Division may be able to provide information.  You can find their contact information on our website at:   https://www.quieteroahu.com/reporting-noise-violations.html

Current version of the Noise Reference Manual can be found here.   https://health.hawaii.gov/irhb/files/2017/08/noiserefoahu.pdf
