NEIGHBORHOOD BOARDS - Be Active

 --What are Neighborhood Boards
Neighborhood Boards are part of the City of Honolulu Government.  There are counterparts in other local governments across Hawaii, but we'll address the City of Honolulu here.

Simply put, the Neighborhood Board (NB) is the lowest level of City Government.  It is, in fact, the Community Level of Government.  There are approximately 33 NBs which comprise the Neighborhood Commission (NC).  The NC Office provides oversight and administration of the NBs.  You can find the current listing of NBs, and their elected members contact info, at this link.

Each NB is geographically defined.  The boundaries of each NB show you in which community you reside for purposes of NB affiliation.  A breakdown of Community NBs and their boundary maps can be found at the following link.

--Why YOU Should Be Active in NBs

Each NB meets monthly.  An agenda if published for each NB meeting.  The agenda publishes the flow of each meeting, items to be discussed, actions to be taken, reports that will be given, and speakers.  Agendas, and the minutes of each NB meeting, are published online and can be found at this link.

Too, you can subscribe to the monthly agenda of your, or any, NB, and the NC agenda and minutes, by going to the following link and signing-up.

--Have Something to say, Speak Out!

Community members with issues they would like to address to the NB, or others in attendance, can request to be added to the NB Agenda.  You will be allotted time, usually about 5-Minutes, to address the NB and attendees.  If Noise is your concern, speak about the problem.  HPD not enforcing noise, speak about the problem.  Representatives unresponsive, speak about the problem.  It's your NB.  You are entitled to express your opinion.

 --Have an Issue?  Ask Questions!

At each NB meeting there are representatives, among others, from HPD, the Mayor's Office, and the Governor's Office.  Other elected representatives are usually represented as well.  Each will address the NB on the previous months activity, items of interest, and other topics.  You may, for example, want to ask HPD why there is virtually NO enforcement of Noise Ordinances and Statutes.  Or how many citations were issued in the previous month for noise infractions.  You are face to face with the representatives.  Ask questions.  If direct questioning isn't allowed, provide the question to your NB representative and have them ask your questions.  Either way.  You're entitled to an answer.

--Bottom Line:  It's YOUR NB - Make it Work To Address Your Interest and Issues.
